The past week, life was hectic with so many social and several academic activities and among them, several were what I wish to share ka.
1. Meaningful Icebreaking: Two more activities are now added on my list ka.
The first was from a workshop on, 'Intercultural Conflict Style Inventory workshop' kindly conducted by Dr. Brian Perkins ((Director of Teachers College--TC, Columbia U's Summer Principals Academy) who was keynote to a conference and offered it to TC alumni.
He had a roll of stickers with 6 animals for us to choose one that could best our personalities! They included Panda, Tiger, Rattlesnake, Cheetah, Chimp, and Giraffe.
We then grouped according to our selection and discussed why the animal was our choice and what other people should know when working with us ka.
My choice was 'Cheetah' as I thought of speed and dynamism first with environment scanning for specific results.
What would be your preferred animal and why ka?
The second was from a session on, 'Board Game and its Application to Research' (this is very special as it was run by a 15-year-old boy น้องแดนไท สุขกำเนิด who has set up his company already!). We were paired up and 3 questions were given one by one. For each of them, we were given 8 types of emoji's for us to choose one for our own feeling, and the other for our partner...then compared with the person to see how close we could be to tell the other's feeling.
It was simple and nice to get to see how close we could be to know the people from our own impression ka.
2. From the Intercultural Conflict Style Inventory workshop, let me share the key questions posed by Brian for our session in case you wish to think further too ka:
- How can I develop my strengths as an educational leaders? how can I leverage strengths across my teams?
- What are the underlying and potentially under-examined cultural assumptions we hold as educational leaders?
- What are intercultural competencies and why are they important?
- What is my preferred approach for communicating and resolving conflict? How does my style contrast with others? What connections or relevance do I see to my leadership work?
We must have 'cultural self-awareness, understanding the experiences of people from diverse communities, and the capability to adapt one's mindset and behavior to bridge across the differences' (Michell R. Hammer, 2011)
We were given a booklet to check our own styles and it was amazed/not amazed?? to see that most seem to be quite direct (participants were mainly graduates of foreign countries at least for their graduate programs) yet accommodating (Thai and Asian style).
After all, the session repeated our 'self-assessment first' ka.
Enjoy your day ka.
