The subject isn't about my experiences ka but I got them from a Harvard Business Review (HBR) March-April 2019 issue and the name from a program I listen from Alexa which is 'HBR: Management Tip of the Day' ka.
Feel so good about the issue because of 2 reasons ka:
First, I got the issue for free before I attended a meeting at Sukhothai Thammathirat Open University late last week. I stopped at a corner where books were piled up for donation ....free books and magazines kaaa! My eyes stopped at a few HBR's and picked up 3 (out of my greed) ka.
Second, I like several articles in this issue especially 'The Future of Leadership Development', and 'Why Feedback fails'.
Let me share the following from these two and others ka:
- Followers make good leaders and they need to be perceived as 'one of us, not one of them' ka.
- Companies want new approaches of executive education to focus more on communicative, interpretive, affective and perceptual skills for leadership to be coherent with proactive collaboration.
- High-value experience is necessary from personalized coaching, project-based learning, and feedback-intensive group sessions while maximizing the benefits of digitalization beyond the traditional lectures and group work ka.
- Several companies give ownership of development to individuals. This reminds me of what CEO of Exxon Mobil Thailand said about the self-guided learning that each has to be held accountable for ka.
- Some learning approaches include sending executives to spend 2-3 days in different parts of the group (decades ago, Samsung sent its people to another culture for one full year to observe lifestyles and cultural practices), apprenticeship training, mentoring, personalizing their development, and classroom and on-the-job training for networking opportunities.
- Strategic thinking needs diverse expertise and experiences to brainstorm new combinations of products and services. It's recommended for one to explain their business to an outsider in another industry for fresh eyes from a different context which may uncover some new ways and answers...otherwise, it could become more like a routine.
- Some feedback examples for the colleagues to excel:
- Instead of 'Can I give you some feedback.', try 'Here's my reaction.'
- Instead of 'Good job!', try 'Here are three things that really worked for me. What was going through your mind when you did them?'
- Instead of 'You need to be more responsive.', try 'When I don't hear from you, I worry that we're not on the same page.'
- Instead of 'You lack strategic thinking.', try 'I'm struggling to understand your plan.'
Haven't read the other 2 issues and hope to get some points I'd love to share ka.
Enjoy a chill day na ka.
