Learning from IZN International Workshop

Hello everyone ka!
During the recent International Workshop on New Normal in Internationalization (IZN) stressing the exchange aspect, I learned a lot that could be highlighted as follows ka:
1. Our first session was given by a Chairman and Managing Director of a public company limited in Thailand, which was really interesting. He started from pointing out the types of exchanges his company has to offer for its employees.
They include traditional exchanges like actual and full assignment and rotation; virtual exchanges among global and regional teams; and other like leadership and training courses (one month basically).
He then talked about the skills, behavior and mindset of employees his company wishes to see (besides technical knowledge, e.g. attitude, cultural awareness, analytical skills, communication skills, willingness, etc.
To him, the most important ones were: communication skills, interpersonal skills, adaptability and flexibility.
As regards, training and development for employees, whatever the company does, it must make sure the training benefits the organization as well, not just individuals!
He told me that Thai employees are smart but need to be more willing to move around as many don’t seem to be away from home for far too long (more than 1 year).  On the other end, it was interesting he said one of his colleagues loved to be posted in ‘difficult’ countries/ regions to earn more as his company provides 5-65% more in salary/compensation ka.
2. An ADB officer’s view about IZN was worth taking note and thinking further ka. He said “Bring IZN home” and create “IZN at home (IaH)”.
I now seriously think of the crucial dimension of IaH and at the same time, ways to maximize the use of IZN experiences readily available at home ka!
3. A session on ‘Complaints, Compromise, and Completion’ was a lot of fun. I learned about an application called, “Socrative”. If you haven’t heard of it, try na ka. Just google to check it out. The application can be used as a great in-class tool. For exchange students, it helps us get voices that may be left unheard so we can learn more about our inbound and outbound students ka.
4. On logistics management, three days was a lot for some participants even with a study visit to ThaiPBS (another nice learning experience for them to see what another sector is doing and how our education sector can well link it up!)
We think the most productive time would be for the second day to go until only before the afternoon break and that the third day should take only half a day. Will adjust it for our future workshops to ensure that our participants are able to retain their full concentration and energy for the sessions.
Life is always on the learning mode no matter what we do ka.
