Good Monday ka....I'm going slow after a very hectic week!
I was going through an article I got a while ago for my book chapter on internationalization and want to pose some questions along with several other related issues ka.
This article entitled, "International Education Leadership: Reflections on Experience" was written by Dr. Jack Van de Water (we call him 'Dr. Nam น้ำ). He's a Fulbright alum and one of the key people to help OHEC work on its IZN since the very early days of our efforts ka.
He was International Education Director since 1976 and after 40 some years, he reflected on his experience of his Senior International Officer (SIO). I'd like to point out a few as follows:
- Oregon State U started its international education with three major components, namely, international students and scholars, study abroad, and an English Language Institute. Dr. Nam focused on Study Abroad following his previous experience ka.
- It was helpful to 'evaluate your prospective employer' to know the stage of development and how that could match our own goals, experiences, and credentials.
- Another dimension is to evaluate the administrative philosophy.
- 'See the big picture and learn how to contribute to the major goals of the institution.'
- Develop a mission statement that has an international perspective.
- SIO needs to be a partner in the process to influence the agenda--- not to control it, and to generate ideas that are relevant to the academic units and other administrative offices. Best is that it's positioned within the academic affairs.
- Quality of the services is the major factor in the reputation of the SIO.
- Cultural diversity and global issues were added in the university's General Education courses.
- Networking is a key ingredient of the success of an SIO.
- Need to mentor junior staff and faculty members to take advantage of opportunities that will open their eyes to the full range of IZN.
- 'We need strong leadership in international education in the next 30 years.'
I'm quite impressed to learn that KMUTT has created new positions on 'ฝ่ายการสร้างความเป็นสากล'......vice president and assistant to the president on IZN! A positive move dee ka!
Now, my questions are as follows ka:
- What qualities will be highly needed for our IZN administrators in our Thai contexts, following what Dr. Nam has reflected ka?
- How should we reshape/reform our witait unit/division to serve IZN toward the directions we would want to see?
Anyone would like to share your thoughts mai ka?
